A Purposeful Day Starts with a Purposeful Morning
While researching my soon-to-be-released book Coyote Smart: Developing God’s Gift for Learning Fast, Adapting Often, and Never Quitting, I explored how the way you begin your morning remarkably influences how you live the rest of your day.
Benjamin Franklin began each morning with a simple question: “What good shall I do this day?”
That question did something a to-do list cannot. It gave the day purpose before activity. Franklin also understood that structure isn’t the enemy of freedom. A disciplined routine—time for work, reading, thinking, meals, and reflection—actually creates more freedom because less of the day is lost deciding what to do next.
I have learned that a good morning doesn’t require accomplishing twenty things before breakfast. It requires deciding what matters before the world starts deciding for you.
So tomorrow morning, before the phone, email, news, and noise get their turn, try Franklin’s question:
What good shall I do this day?
Then build your day around the answer. Sometimes an old idea is still around because it works.
